Veteran heavy cargo shipping, breakbulk logistics, and multipurpose project specialist Svend Andersen has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of more than five decades in the industry after beginning his career in 1972. This professional had close ties to Spain, and his long illness prevented him from attending the presentation in Madrid and Bilbao of his latest major achievement, the creation of the JSI Alliance.

The commercial platform, which brings together three maritime operators specializing in special cargo: Jumbo Shipping (Netherlands), SAL Heavy Lift (Germany), and Intermarine (United States), concluded its series of presentations to clients, partners, and friends in the logistics sector in Bilbao last October. Josu Iturri, managing director of JSI Alliance Iberia, had words of remembrance and recognition for Svend Andersen at the event.

A long career
Andersen began his career in the maritime industry in the 1970s, working as an apprentice and gaining experience in various maritime roles at Frosig and Jorgensen. He was one of the founders of the Danish company Copenship in 1978 and ran his own shipping company, S.A., Shipping, from 1981.

Throughout his career, Andersen played key roles in major companies in the sector. In 1993, he joined Intermarine, but he is best known as the co-founder of BBC Chartering, where his work helped consolidate the company as one of the world´s leading operators of multipurpose and project cargo vessels for almost 25 years.

He also founded his own companies and held leadership and management positions in various maritime businesses related to the sector. After retiring in August 2019, Andersen returned to the sector to take up the position of CEO of Intermarine following the acquisition of a majority stake in the company by SAL Heavy Lift.
