The IMO is preparing to evacuate more than 11,000 crew members stranded in the Strait of Ormuz

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has announced a plan to evacuate the more than 11,000 crew members who remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz area, following the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran.

As explained by the IMO’s Secretary-General, Arsenio Domínguez, the agreement represents a significant step towards restoring security on one of the world’s most important shipping routes and reducing the risks to commercial vessels transiting the region.

The evacuation plan will be carried out in collaboration with Iran, Oman, the United States and representatives of the maritime industry. The organisation has stated that the necessary safety guarantees have already been obtained to carry out the operations safely.

Domínguez also paid tribute to the 14 seafarers who lost their lives during the conflict and highlighted the importance of the work carried out by maritime professionals in maintaining international trade and supply chains.
