World Maritime Day 2023
World Maritime Day 2023 takes place on 28 September 2023. This year´s theme is "50 years of MARPOL: our commitment continues".
The IMO-UNEP-Norway Innovation Forum 2023. The event takes place on 28 September 2023 at IMO headquarters and remotely. The Forum includes topics such as: environmental performance; reduce marine plastic litter from ships; support innovation in marine fuel production; decarbonization of the maritime sector; unlock green finance; and partnerships and collaboration.
Illumination of emblematic buildings. The IMO headquarters will be illuminated blue at night on that day to promote this year´s theme. IMO invites Member States, intergovernmental organizations in collaboration with IMO and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO to illuminate iconic buildings.
Participation in social networks. IMO invites Member States and everyone in the maritime sector to celebrate the day on social media using the hashtag #WorldMaritimeDay and tagging IMO on social media.
50 years of MARPOL: our commitment continues
The IMO World Maritime Day theme for 2023 is "50 years of MARPOL: our commitment continues".
The motto reflects the organization´s long history of protecting the environment from the effects of maritime transport through a solid regulatory framework and highlights its ongoing commitment to this important work. The theme "50 years of MARPOL: our commitment continues" also highlights the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention) on the prevention of pollution of the marine environment from ships, whether due to operational or accidental causes.
