Today (October 6, 2026), half a century of cooperation to protect the Mediterranean’s marine environment was commemorated as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Center for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), under the theme “Our Mediterranean, Our Responsibility.”
The commemorative event, held as part of the Malta Maritime Summit, brought together Mediterranean coastal states to reflect on five decades of cooperation and analyze the challenges facing the region.
Established in 1976 as the Regional Center for Combating Oil Pollution, REMPEC was founded to strengthen the preparedness and response capabilities of Mediterranean coastal states. Since then, its role has evolved to address a broader range of challenges related to marine pollution, with an increasing focus on preventing pollution from ships.
Over the past five decades, REMPEC has helped 20 Mediterranean countries establish operational marine pollution contingency systems, has provided specialized support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through the Mediterranean Assistance Unit, and has trained more than 5,000 government officials and volunteers in pollution preparedness and response. Its work has also helped countries strengthen legislation to prevent pollution from ships and has contributed to regional efforts aimed at transitioning to lower-carbon maritime transport.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Domínguez participated in the commemorative event and highlighted the importance of maintaining regional cooperation to protect one of the world’s most important and shared marine environments.
The Mediterranean connects communities, economies, and ecosystems along its coasts. Its protection depends on sustained cooperation, preparedness, and a shared commitment to action.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years, REMPEC’s role remains as relevant as ever: helping Mediterranean countries prepare for new environmental challenges, strengthening pollution prevention and response, and working together to protect the sea for future generations.
